Top Sights to See in and Around Birmingham

Are you travelling to Birmingham? This lovely West Midlands city is full of wonderful sights to see and places to visit. It’s usually best to hire a car for your stay so you can easily travel to all of the wonderful locations that are must-sees in the area.

If you’re in the city for a few days, here are some of the best sights you should see:

The Birmingham Botanical Gardens

If you enjoy nature and gardens, this is one of the best botanical gardens around. Situated on 15 acres in Edgbaston, these gardens are truly impressive. They were designed originally in 1829 by John Claudius Loudon, who was a horticulturalist. Many of the gardens still follow his original layouts.

Cadbury World

Who doesn’t love a good bit of chocolate? The Cadbury company is well known for its chocolate treats and this museum shows the history of the chocolate business. You’ll learn plenty about chocolate that you never imagined and you’ll get to sample the wares, too.

The National Sea Life Centre

This aquarium features both freshwater and marine animals. Located in Brindleyplace, you’ll find the aquarium is well laid out and quite interesting. It features the only 360° underwater tunnel in the UK, where you can see giant sea turtles, reef sharks and a variety of tropical fish. This is a particularly good place to take young children, as they will be fascinated with everything there is to see.

Black Country Living Museum

For anyone who loves history, this is the place to visit. It’s a little out of the way, located in Dudley, in the centre of Black Country, but it’s well worth the drive. Here you’ll find a large open-air museum filled with rebuilt historic homes and shops, as well as other types of industrial buildings.  You can enjoy a trip down the canal in a boat, ride a tram, or simply wander the streets of history.

Thinktank Birmingham Science Museum

If you’re travelling with children, this is one place you really must stop at. The museum is quite hands-on, allowing visitors to test out science experiments and theories themselves. It features a children’s town, a science garden, planetarium, and much more. Watch for special events while you’re in the area, as they frequently hold events and specialty exhibits.

There’s so much to see in Birmingham and the surrounding area that you could easily spend weeks here and still not see it all. Nottingham is just a drive away, as well, so you can really get some exploring in.
